Synopsis

Each summer CORA distributes food to more than 1000 hungry kids who depend on federal school meals for adequate nutrition during the school year, but who have little or no replacement for this nutrition when school is not in session.

SNACK! provides food for these meals — 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches and daily snacks — for 10 weeks mid-June through mid-August.

Pick-Up Locations

This year we have 17 pick-up locations located throughout the county. Each site has different days and times that they give out food during the delivery week. These different days and times allow for those of many different schedules to find a site that works for them.

(Note: Chatham UMC was incorrectly labeled as Cedar Grove UMC on the Peachjar flyer. Site 12 is Chatham UMC.
Also, Merritt’s Chapel was incorrectly placed, it is now in its correct location.)

The Need

Chatham Needed a Summer Food Program for School Children

Did you know that 50% of public school children in Chatham County receive free or low cost meals (breakfast and lunch) through the federal school lunch program because their family income is at or near poverty level?

That’s more than 4000 Chatham County school children who will likely not have adequate replacements for these meals during the summer. Because Chatham is a large rural county (709 square miles) with scant public transportation, federal programs that require serving prepared meals at a central location are not practical here in the summer for the families of these kids.

A new kind of program was needed to better ensure accessibility and to better address the transportation difficulties of those families who needed services.  CORA Food Pantry created SNACK! (Summer Nutritional  Assistance for Chatham Kids) in 2009 to address these challenges and to help assure adequate nutrition year-round for these disadvantaged children.

How it Works

Client identification and enrollment: Families with children who receive free or reduced lunch enroll their eligible children to collect food from their choice of 14 or more distribution sites located throughout the county.

Food Distribution:  SNACK!  runs from mid-June to mid-August for 10 weeks.   Beginning in the summer of 2016 food distribution changed to “client choice.” Instead of giving each child a pre-packed box of food, foods are displayed like a small grocery store and parents and children are able to choose from several items in most categories (protein, vegetable, fruit, etc.). Client choice better serves the needs and preferences of individual families and better engages children in the process.

The Food:  Children will get enough food for 10+ nutritionally balanced meals ( 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches and healthy snacks) each week during summer break including fresh local produce from Farmer Food Share.

Our SNACK! Partners: CORA Food Pantry oversees management of SNACK! Chatham County Schools & Dept. of Social Services help to enroll and qualify eligible children. Distribution sites have included Take and Eat Food Pantry, West Chatham Food Pantry, God’s Helping Hand Food Pantry, Pittsboro Kiwanis, and as many as 13 local churches.
