Understanding Food Insecurity

Posted on: April 17, 2025

At CORA, we believe food is a basic human right. However, access to nutritious food is a daily struggle for many in our community. Understanding food insecurity is crucial to our vision of building a community without hunger.

What Is Food Insecurity?

Food insecurity is the lack of consistent access to enough food for a healthy life. It often manifests as parents skipping meals to feed their children or choosing between groceries and medical bills.

Who Is Affected?

Food insecurity can impact anyone, including families with children, seniors on fixed incomes, and those in low-wage jobs. In Chatham County, many face challenges due to limited access to grocery stores or transportation. Last year, CORA served over 3,000 families and provided 1.8 million meals across Chatham County.

The Impact of Food Insecurity

The effects extend beyond hunger. Children may struggle in school, and adults face higher health risks. Seniors may have to choose between food and medications, leading to emotional stress and feelings of shame.

How CORA Is Making a Difference

CORA addresses food insecurity with compassion and dignity through various programs:

  • Choice Food Pantry: Families select the groceries to encourage dignity and dietary choice.
  • Mobile Market: Food is brought to underserved areas in Chatham County.
  • SNACK!: Provides groceries to children when school is out.
  • CORApacks: Provides nutritional and easy-to-prepare foods to children on weekends and during breaks during the school year.

Last year, our programs facilitated over 91,000 service visits, ensuring access to 21 meals per person.

Why It Matters

Because when people have enough to eat, they’re healthier, stronger, and better able to care for their families, succeed at work or school, and contribute to the well-being of their neighbors. Feeding people isn’t just an act of compassion—it’s how we build a thriving, connected community where everyone can flourish.

You can help CORA build a community without hunger by giving, volunteering, or sharing our mission.
